UMAA Kids' Program 2007

A team of wonderful volunteers kept kids engaged in two days of fun at the UMAA Kids Program. The hours were extended this year so that parents could attend lectures as well as workshops while their children were safe and supervised. This year's theme encouraged children to 'Go Green' reminding them of recycling, reducing and reusing.

The wide range of crafts, games activities had children reluctant to leave at the end of the day. Children signed in by cutting out hand prints and sticking them on our tree, followed by fruit loop necklaces- just in case anyone rushed breakfast!

Designing Earth posters

Throughout the day kids made earth posters and colored pictures of animals and flowers, filling the wall with artwork.

This year older children were treated to special science activity that tied in with our earth topic- exploding volcanoes! The girl's volcano shot lava into the air as high as 5ft, while the boy's team reached 4 1/2 ft.

It was a pleasure to have the respected young scholar; Jawad Qazwini discuss creation and our responsibilities to creatures with children. He explained that we are different to other animals because Allah gave us intellect, and we should use that to do the right thing. He reminded children that stepping on ants or hunting animals for fun are not allowed by Islam, and he answered children's questions.

Parachute games

Physical activities are essential to kids, so children had a blast playing with the parachute and bubbles. For the creative ones play-doh was a big hit, while beading bracelets and necklaces were a favorite with girls.

Through the day volunteers kept children busy with games such as 'Treasure Hunt' and 'Duck Duck Goose'. Children didn't want to end a game of 'Seven Up'.

Candy prizes were shared after playing bingo and the popular Jeopardy style quiz that flexed kid's Islamic knowledge.

Kids welcomed the change from the usual junk food with healthy snacks; chex mix, carrots & ranch and apples during snack time.

Fun at the Pajama Party

The Pajama Party was a new event this year. The party coincided with UMAA's Annual Banquet. It proved extremely popular and without a doubt the highlight of the UMAA Kids experience.

Kids eagerly arrived dressed in their pajamas. They voted on a movie and feasted on pizza and cakes.

There are lots more photos of children at the Kids Program, click to see photos ' Kids Program Slideshow 2007 ' . Thanks to all the parents that allowed us to spend time with their great children, it was pleasure, and a special thank you to all the terrific volunteers who truly did a superb job!

I look forward to seeing these happy faces again next year, Inshallah.
