Message From The President

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the UMAA website. I wholeheartedly appreciate you taking the time to visit our website. As you must be aware, our convention is right around the corner. This year’s theme is “Changing the Perception of Islam in the West”. We have divided the program into 4 main areas: 1) Islam and Western Media 2) Islam and Western Politics 3) Challenging Misconceptions about Islam 4) The Global State of the Shia UMAAh. We have invited world renowned experts to speak on these important topics which will help educate us all on how to go about actually changing the perception of Islam in the West. This year we are proud to have one of the largest gatherings of Academic Shia Scholars in the history of this country. Combined with dynamic young ulema, this year’s convention has one of the most exciting programs to date.

We are now entering a critical period for this organization, a period that is sure to bring great change, new ideas, and a completely new approach to business here at UMAA. One of my main objectives as President of UMAA is to empower the young adults and youth to take over the reins of this organization. UMAA has had its highs and lows over the years, but this year brings me more excitement than any other year. Why the excitement? It’s because we are transitioning our leadership. We now have young brothers and sisters in their mid 20’s who have taken over key roles in UMAA. Some may think it’s too early, but I have my utmost trust and faith that they will take UMAA to unimaginable heights. UMAA has always talked about giving the organization over to the next generation, but this year we are actually doing it.

The political climate around the world has put the Shia community at the forefront. Now our prominent Marajae are household names, the averagely educated American has heard of Kerbala and Najaf, but the global community is still unsure of what to think of the Shias. This is where the American Muslim Shia community has a very pivotal role to play. It is our responsibility to engage the western media, government, and western society as a whole to help shape the image of Shiaism in its correct form. UMAA was formed with the purpose of doing just this.

It is my hope that as in the past, this year’s convention will help momineen network with one another, form unions, facilitate marriages, and reunite friends who only meet once a year. I hope to make myself as visible and accessible as I can during this year’s convention just to allow everyone to be able to ask me questions personally. I welcome any and all suggestions, criticism, and input. We are willing to do whatever it takes to make this organization into what the Shia community of North America needs.

May Allah (swt) Bless you all

Sincerely,
Dr. Ehtisham Abidi
